Homeowners and businesses on Barbados are celebrating the progress being made to make the entire island a free wifi zone, after a report revealed 60 per cent of the population now has access to the internet.

As part of a drive to encourage more businesses to set up in Barbados, local business organisation the Barbados Entrepreneurship Foundation (BEF) last year set itself the target of making wifi accessible across the whole island, from “bus stop to rum shop”.

Meeting this target has relied on local businesses with internet connectivity configuring their internal networks to include guest networks, allowing free wireless internet access.

As of November 11, while only 25 per cent of the island geographically had free internet access, in terms of population around 60 per cent of the island had access to it. More than two thirds of Barbados’s residents live in the west and southern parts of the island, where most of its commercial activity is based, notably around Bridgetown.
