Getting to your holiday home on the Caribbean island of Antigua, and its sister island Barbuda, is to get easier following the announcement that a new $43million airport will be built there by the end of 2013.

The Minister of Tourism in Antigua, John Maginley, said that the island’s current airport is outdated and wasn’t designed to cope with the increasing number of passengers visiting Antigua. For the second quarter of this year, tourist numbers from the UK alone were up 10 per cent on 2010. British Airways is set to increase its number of direct flights to Antigua from Gatwick by one – to seven per week – come March 2012.

As part of its drive to attract more visitors, Antigua and Barbuda will shortly be launching a website that brings together all social media channels and promotes everything the island has to offer, from hotels to experiences and available discounts. It will also include a booking engine to allow consumers to book holidays through the site.
