Emma has given us her exclusive room-by-room guide to the art of accessorising so you too can add the perfect finishing touches that will transform your house into a picture perfect, Instagram-ready home.
“Whether you’re going for a contemporary or a classic look, I believe you should make a house feel very personal to its owners,” says Emma.
“Starting in the living room, grouping simple accessories together on a coffee table or sideboard is a great way to display your favourite pieces together without making the room feel cluttered.
“I select items for their colour, texture and design form. You can be quite eclectic with your choices and your items don’t all need to match but there should be some synergy between them. I love using natural textures such as terracotta and stone, and freshening this up with ceramics and greenery.”
“In the kitchen, especially if you have a fabulous open-plan room with a dining area, you can have even more fun with personal touches. Wall displays featuring framed artwork and posters can look great alongside chalkboards and wall hooks. I also love using small shelving to display ceramics, plants and jams and herbs to bring the outdoors in.”
“Bedrooms are places of rest and relaxation so the key is not to over-embellish. In the master bedroom I usually opt for a classic look. I love over-sized and deep-buttoned headboards, floral cushions and subtle lighting. You can add a touch of glamour to dressing tables with stylish mirror designs and textures of marble and glass, while I feel fresh or faux florals really finish the room to perfection.”
“In a child’s or teenager’s bedroom you can really use your imagination. Small shelves look wonderful on a colourful feature wall to display artwork and souvenirs. You can also be inventive with ways to display personal photos using hangers or pegs while featuring their initials on wall letters or cushions gives an additional individual touch.”
“Finally in your bathrooms and en-suites, the key is understated glamour if you really want to achieve that boutique hotel style. Keep your everyday essentials out of sight and display just a handful of luxury items such as soaps or scented candles. Slate and stone provide a striking finish for wall and floor tiling paired with neutrals to keep the final look streamlined and elegant. To add a touch of natural greenery we love to include succulents and cacti.”
