2017 Home Trends: Hygge and Greenery

With every New Year comes an urge to freshen up our homes, to make them feel almost new as we embark on a fresh start, a year full of hope, happiness and endless possibilities.

Renewing the décor and maintaining a warm and inviting look can be achieved by following two trends which will be seen in show homes up and down the country this year. Redrow’s interior design manager, Emma Brindley, talks us through the trends, to inspire homeowners to create their own calming sanctuary at home.

Emma says: “This year we’ll continue to see home design embrace the Hygge concept: cosy, warm and candlelit interiors that in short, make a house truly feel like home.

“Hygge is predominantly associated with cold winter months, thanks to the feel-good factor it encourages and the warm inviting nature of this look. At this time of year, when staying indoors is the new going out, injecting some Hygge into your home will create the perfect ambiance.

“Bring warmth and comfort into a room by adorning sofas with good quality, thick knits and soft wools in subtle hues. Not only does it look stylish, it brings a rustic element to your design that is influenced by all things nature.

“Declutter your space so that you only have what you really need around you. Don’t overload rooms with accessories, just keep the bits that mean the most and really contribute to your overall design. Treat yourself to new crockery to store the essentials such as coffee and tea or new picture frames in weathered woods for a small but significant transformation.

“At the heart of Hygge thinking is family and friends, so get social. Spend as much time enjoying good foods and socialising with the ones you love.

“Most importantly, Hygge is not about extravagance or impressing people; it’s about creating a space that is warm and cosy and somewhere you can spend hours with friends and family, feeling relaxed and making memories.

“Nothing feeds the soul more than the beautiful outdoors so try and bring as much of the outside in as possible. Pantones colour of the year, Greenery, is all about turning to nature to create a calming sanctuary for you to live in, much like Hygge.

“Greenery is a vibrant colour and a statement symbol that represents fresh starts, hope and happiness but it is also an intense colour and can be difficult to get right. It’s bold, so adorning your walls is probably not the best way to go.

“Instead, breathe life into your home with fresh greenery, try dotting around different shaped cacti in various green shades for a contemporary feel, or for a more traditional twist opt for luscious green herbs in zinc pots. Even flourishes of fresh flowers, picked from the garden can brighten up the house and make your space feel like home.

“Place vibrant green plants on gold trays and drape thick green woollen knits from copper wire baskets for the ultimate statement feature. Finish the look with a pile of your favourite books and remember Pantones colour of the year ‘Greenery’ is all about creating a calming sanctuary for you to relax in.”
