Beat the burglar with National Home Security Month

Burglar You’ve collected the keys to your new home, had the moving van deliver all your furniture, and finally, locked your new front door for the very first time. But while your attention turns to where you’re going hang those photos and what colour to paint the hallway, it’s easy to forget arguably the most valuable home improvement – protecting your new pad with the latest security measures to keep your precious possessions safe.

Whether you’re buying or renting, the majority of Brits tend to perceive home security as a reactive purchase, only purchasing devices once you or someone you know has been the victim of theft, as opposed to reactively buying products to prevent an incident occurring. As a result, National Home Security Month (NHSM) is back to change this habit and make your new house a home.

The initiative, sponsored by security specialist Yale, is designed to create awareness around the importance of home security to homeowners across the UK. After witnessing huge success over the last three years, NHSM has returned this October with even more top tips, home hacks and handy advice to keep yourself and your property secure.

With research revealing that in the UK alone there were over 700,000 domestic burglaries for the year ending March 2016*, and thefts surge by 38% following the clocks going back,** there is no better time than now to start considering home security solutions.

The campaign spans five weeks in October, with each week focusing on a different element of home security. The first week, commencing 3rd October, celebrates the launch of NHSM with security tips, products offers and competitions. The second hones in on the different elements of home security, exploring the traditional, mechanical solutions for securing the entry points to your home. This will provide advice on British Standard locking solutions, as well as advising you on what burglars look for when scouting a potential target.

The following week, commencing 17th October, takes a look at the growing smart security industry, investigating how new technology can help you to keep your home secure remotely at the touch of button. It will also look at how security has evolved over time and what new devices you should be on the lookout for.

Week four centres on the onset of the dark nights to coincide with the clocks going back – marking the end of British Summertime. This week will encourage you to think about securing the exterior of your property, ensuring any outbuildings are secure and tempted thieves can’t easily see into your home. And finally, week five has a seasonal tie-in, providing information on the increase in thefts during the Halloween and Bonfire Night period, and how to keep those mischievous monsters at bay.

After the success of previous years, National Home Security Month is hoping to be bigger and better than ever!
