Cesare Chiari di Casarza, the Ligurian architect who had developed the project for the imperious 18-storey tower in 1966, had been obliged to meet high standards of solidity and proven anti-seismic requirements, given that not even a century had passed since devastating earthquake of 1887, which had razed Oneglia to the ground. The project to build a skyscraper in the historic center was born while Giorgio Verda was mayor in Imperia. These were the years of the construction boom as well as the economy. The building was built to recover, with an example of modernity, the area of the former prisons, an old penitentiary demolished by the bombings of the Second World War.
Families from Imperia and the Dianese Gulf with well-known goldsmiths from Valenza Po, decide to present the plan with the skyscraper: we are in the years in which the tallest modern building is the Pirellone in Milan, just over 100 meters.
The Imperia tower reaches almost 80 meters. In any case, the a priori critique of his architectural language cannot be shared, which is certainly not an example of building without style, but rather a key to understanding what was the way of thinking and building buildings in those years.
A style that, in the case of Imperia, puts aside certain brutalisms linked to the indiscriminate use of exposed concrete, to give space to finishes that were valuable at the time: aluminum windows, mineral coatings, crystal parapets.
The shapes, finishes and materials; all very far from what one would expect from a project today, but then that was the trend and above all the new construction, the skyscraper, represented the symbol of a city that aspired to grow and renew itself.
