A major annual cycling event is to be staged in the Algarve over the next few days, providing an indication of the level of interest in the activity in the region.

The Volta ao Algarve (Tour of Algarve) cycling race starts today (February 18th) and continues until February 23rd.

Beginning in Albufeira, the course passes through locations such as Faro, Lagos, Loule, Tavira and Vila do Bispo before finishing in Portimao, with nine legs in all.

Such an event may appeal to cycling enthusiasts keen on purchasing property in the region, both as a spectacle they can see each year featuring top riders and also as an inspiration to themselves to spend more time on two wheels.

This year’s line-up includes the 2007 Tour de France winner Alberto Contador and his Astana team mate, the legendary Lance Armstrong, who came out of retirement last year.
