Visitors to property in France may want to ensure they are protectedBritons heading to property in France may want to make sure they have travel insurance in place to cover the financial cost of any mishaps.

ABTA – The Travel Association has published figures showing almost one in five UK holidaymakers heads abroad with no insurance in place.

However, one in eight people in the past five years have made a claim following an incident while overseas.

The figures suggest that three per cent of UK travellers may have suffered a similar incident but without the protection of travel insurance, leaving them to foot any bills themselves.

Mike Monk, head of finance at ABTA, adds that more than half of holidaymakers have no protection in place should their trip be cancelled due to redundancy or illness.

The Foreign & Commonwealth Office advises that travellers to property in France's mountainous regions in particular should ensure they are covered for medical evacuation by helicopter.
