Reaching property in France could have a smaller carbon footprintReaching property in France could be more eco-friendly for Air France KLM passengers – without them having to do anything themselves.

That is because the airline is the latest to announce that its flights are departing with fewer empty seats, reducing the carbon footprint incurred by each traveller.

According to Air France KLM, in October 2010 it reached "a very high level" of passenger load at 84.2 per cent of available capacity.

That is thanks to a one per cent increase in seats available during the month, but a 3.1 per cent rise in demand.

More people flew to property in France using the airline's services in October in spite of industrial action by air traffic controllers, it adds, while a greater amount of cargo was also handled during the month.

Despite the strikes, the Foreign & Commonwealth Office noted that French Civil Aviation Authority advice was for 70 per cent of flights at affected airports to go ahead, with the exception of Orly where the authority recommended half of journeys should go ahead as planned.
