Portugal has been hailed as a green tourism destination, something that may help attract investors to the Portugal property market.

A recent poll by the Association of British Travel Insurers has found that 83 per cent of travellers are keen that their trips should not have negative environmental consequences and the Portuguese tourism authority has said their country fits the bill in meeting these desires, as it is making good progress in developing renewable energy.

Vice president of the office Dr Frederico Costa said: "With 220 days of sunshine a year and 800 kilometres of coastline, Portugal boasts some excellent natural advantages for the development of renewable energies," adding that this meant holidays there are greener.

Such attributes may help the Portugal property market by encouraging green tourism.

One example of pioneering renewable energy use in Portugal is the recent establishment of the world’s first offshore wave farm.

Last month saw the official opening of the Agucadoura wave farm off the Portuguese coast, which uses the Pelamis system designed by UK firm Ocean Power Delivery.
