Description

Whitechapel Manor is a magnificent Grade l Listed Elizabethan Manor House and has been described as an outstanding house with a remarkably well preserved interior. All principal rooms face south with fantastic views out across the formal walled and terraced gardens.

Whilst having been extensively refurbished and renovated, particular care has been taken over the years to maintain the character of the house; in particular the Great Hall that is divided by a fine, richly carved oak screen. Along with further antique panelled rooms with plaster moulded ceilings there are a number of beautiful original fireplaces and chimney pieces.

Whitechapel Manor is a wonderful family home, perfect for entertaining on a large scale. Of particular note are the impressive number of reception rooms, all of which flow beautifully to create the perfect entertaining space. With two bedroom suites and a further nine en-suite bedrooms, the house has ample and flexible accommodation for any incoming purchaser and is ideally set up for a large number of family members and guests.

Astons Cottage - Available via separate negotiation.

Outbuildings
To the rear of the house are five stables with power and water, a selection of store rooms and two double garages. The outbuildings surround a lovely cobbled courtyard.

Gardens and Grounds
The gardens at Whitechapel Manor are a particular feature of the house. From the terraced lawns to the walled garden, all have been meticulously maintained. The garden offers a variety of areas to retreat to and all offer the magnificent distant views to the south. There are a variety of mature trees from walnut trees, copper beach and a 400 year old Mulberry tree. Beyond the gardens are two paddocks and an area of woodland.

History
Whitechapel Manor's history can be tracked back to the 13th century when it was known as Blanchapele, owned by the Peverall Family of Sandford. The site was originally home to a chapel, hence the name Whitechapel.

From here, the house passed to Sir Alan Bassett on his marriage to Lucia Peverell. Alan Bassett was the descendent of an ancient family long established in North Devon and it was they who built the present house in the 16th Century. The Bassett family remained in residence until the early 1600's. A succession of owners followed and during the 1700's the house was remodelled inside.

In the early 1800's the manor was subject to chancery proceedings and was sold by order of the court to a Mrs Sanger who's son was installed here. John Sanger was a well known character in South Molton. The house was then passed down to his grandson and in his will he left the manor to one of his servants and her husband which generated 30 years of negotiation by his nephew in a fruitless attempt to regain it.
In 1904 Whitechapel was purchased as a holiday home by Cannon Glossop. It was the Glossop's who enlarged the house at the rear, terraced the gardens and excuvated the swimming pool which is now a large ornament fish pond. The family left in 1926 and the property was then purchased by the Mr and Mrs Lloyd. They were followed by Lt Colonel Bayley who was resident until 1963 when the 500 acre plus estate was broken up. The house and 14 acres was bought by a London businessman, Mr Lee who lived here until 1985 when the house was converted into a hotel. It became a private house once more in 2000 after it was purchased by the current owner in 1996.
